Enhancing AEGEAN’s Customer Experience Through Automated Testing

Building a scalable QA Automation Framework to accelerate releases and elevate customer experience

Executive Summary

Enhancing AEGEAN’s Customer Experience Through Automated Testing

AEGEAN Airlines, Greece's flagship carrier, is in the midst of a strategic initiative to modernise its Retail platform and website. The primary objectives are to enhance customer experience, reduce dependency on the Amadeus Global Distribution System (GDS) through independent services, and deliver more personalised travel offerings.

To support these goals, AEGEAN partners with our team to design and implement a robust QA Automation Framework. This framework is aimed at increasing test coverage, accelerating release cycles, and ensuring platform reliability—core enablers for AEGEAN’s customer-centric digital transformation vision.

AEGEAN Airlines is Greece's largest airline, operating a fleet of 83 aircraft and serving 162 destinations across 47 countries. As a member of the Star Alliance, AEGEAN has been recognised as the Best Regional Airline in Europe by the Skytrax World Airline Awards for 13 consecutive years. The airline remains committed to innovation and excellence in customer service, continually expanding its network and enhancing its offerings.

AEGEAN is modernising its retail platform to deliver a personalised and seamless customer experience. The existing reliance on the Amadeus GDS limits flexibility and innovation, prompting the need for a more agile, independent solution.

Key challenges include:

  • Assurance of High Solution Quality: Ensure that a large scale custom solution development like New eRetail is delivered to the best possible quality of code, comparable to the level of quality provided by platform-based solutions.

  • De-risking Project Delivery: Given that New eRetail is developed by a local vendor that did not deliver solutions of such scale previously, it is important for Aegean to add an extra layer of quality assurance.

  • Agile Development, Optimising Cost and Project Schedule: Implementing a scalable and efficient QA process to support rapid development and deployment cycles. Frequent manual re-testing of such extensive solution would be too costly and most likely extend project schedule significantly if it is not automated.

To address these challenges, AEGEAN engages Portaltech Reply to create a comprehensive QA Automation framework that ensures quality, reliability, and speed in the new platform’s delivery.

Our team works closely with AEGEAN to design and implement a tailored QA Automation Framework aligned with their modernisation objectives. The solution encompasses:

Technology Stack:

  • Selenium – Robust web UI testing.

  • RestAssured – API functionality validation.

  • Cucumber – Behaviour-Driven Development (BDD) for clearer communication between technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Infrastructure:

  • Microsoft Azure – Hosting the automation framework to leverage cloud scalability.

  • Azure Kubernetes Services (AKS) – Dynamically manages Selenium Grid Nodes, scaling based on test demand to reduce manual effort and handle variable workloads efficiently.

  • Jenkins – Orchestrates automated test executions and integrates with CI/CD pipelines.

Implementation Phases:

  • Discovery – Understanding AEGEAN’s requirements and current infrastructure.

  • Design – Developing a scalable, maintainable automation architecture.

  • Development – Building reusable and modular test scripts aligned with the product roadmap.

  • Testing and Validation – Running and refining automated test suites to confirm framework effectiveness.

We maintain continuous collaboration with AEGEAN’s development and operations teams to ensure smooth integration, adoption, and knowledge transfer.

While the project is ongoing, the QA Automation Framework is already showing early signs of delivering measurable benefits, informed by experience on similar large-scale automation programmes:

  • Enhanced Test Coverage – Significant increase in automated test coverage on top of manual testing, ensuring more comprehensive validation.

  • Accelerated Release Cycles – Reduction in regression testing time, enabling faster feature delivery.

  • Improved Platform Reliability – Earlier detection of defects during development, reducing production incidents.

  • Support for Personalised Experiences – Enabling faster, more reliable rollouts of customer-focused features.

Key Takeaways And Why It Matters

  • Strategic Alignment – The QA Automation Framework underpins AEGEAN’s digital transformation and customer-first strategy.

  • Scalability and Flexibility – Cloud-native infrastructure adapts to evolving demands.

  • Enhanced Collaboration – BDD fosters improved communication between business and technical stakeholders.

  • Continuous Improvement – CI/CD integration enables rapid iteration and responsiveness to market changes.

This ongoing initiative illustrates how a tailored QA Automation strategy can be a cornerstone of digital transformation, giving AEGEAN the agility, quality and scalability needed to deliver exceptional customer experiences.
